“Leaders who understand artificial intelligence will replace leaders who don’t. It is not AI who will replace leaders.”
This was one of the main points made during the Jom Startup! discussion organised by Selangor Information Technology & E-commerce Council (SITEC) in Shah Alam on May 24, 2019.
The event, ‘Understanding the rise of artificial intelligence’ saw WISE AI’s Artificial Intelligence Engineer Leong Lai Fong join a distinguished panel which included Co-founder and CEO of Invictus Leader V.S. Ravi, data scientist Dr Poo Kuan Hoong (Co-founder and CEO of Coqnitics) as well as Mahmud Azhar Ahmad Zaki, the Head of Sales at 8excite.
“It is an honour for WISE AI to be included in events such as this. This is where industry leaders gather and we are grateful for the recognition,” said Leong.
She explained facial recognition is more than just an aid to tighten a company’s security system.
“Many see it as just a way to enhance security and for convenience, to help cut queues, but it so much more than that,” she told a crowd of around 60 start-up owners.
“Facial recognition can help cut costs and save companies as it is a one-time investment. It can also help businesses get closer to their customers.”
Leong, a key member of WISE AI, comes with 10 years’ experience in software engineering and research and development, specialising in 3D modelling and 2Dimage processing solutions.
She cited how cosmetics brand L’Oreal, had last month, tied up with Alibaba Group to bring a new facial recognition acne-testing app – La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Spotscan – to online retail website TMall.
The goal is to bring better skincare to the masses as many don’t have access to costly dermatological services.
“As you can see, L’Oreal is using facial recognition to improve customer service and make it easier for customers to test what sort of products they should use.”
Leong added the key to getting facial recognition right is to have people who can understand the data which will then be used to better serve the objectives of the company and fulfil its goals.
